If you’re looking for a fantastic country pub in Staffordshire then you won’t be disappointed by a visit to the Red Lion. Cosy, friendly and with some of the best food in the area this is definitely one to add to your foodie bucket list.

Located in the small Staffordshire village of Newborough this cheerful pub will welcome you with a smile, making you feel right at home.

The main pub and bar area is split from the restaurant meaning drinkers and diners can be kept apart if wanted. The bar will often have an open fire roaring, the perfect place to relax with the Sunday papers or a catch up with friends. This pub is popular with locals and the nearby shooting crowd but you’ll never feel unwelcome. People from these sleepy Staffordshire villages are some of the friendliest in the country.

The restaurant is slightly more formal although don’t worry too much about wearing your best, this is a country pub after all. The menu is full of seasonal produce, sourced locally as much as possible. Sunday lunch is one of the best in the area and we’ve visited several times in a large group. They are always super accommodating.

Food at the Red Lion Newborough

We’ve always found the food at the Red Lion to be extremely good quality. For a mid week meal I particularly recommend their juicy rotisserie chicken. But I would happily just feast on several of their starters. The Halloumi fries and potted shrimp are particular favourites.

Sunday Lunch at the Red Lion Newborough

I’m a sucker for a Sunday roast out and the Red Lion is somewhere we choose again and again. They always have a variety of meats on the menu all with accompaniments (think massive yorkshire puddings and tasty stuffing) plus a few veggie options.

We always add a starter, at this time of year the soup with generous chunk of bread is perfect.

Visiting with Kids and Dogs

Dogs are welcome in the bar area but not allowed in the main restaurant. They’ll always have a bowl of water by the door and may even offer up a treat or two.

Don’t worry if you want to eat when visiting with your dog, the bar menu is fantastic. Whilst we’re on the topic of bar food, their bar snacks are substantial and imaginative. They offer everything from a simple bowl of olives to salty pigs in blankets.

Kids are also welcome throughout the pub and they have a small but delicious children’s menu. They’ll also do kids sized roasts on a Sunday.

Red Lion opening hours

Address of the Red Lion

Newborough village is one of the prettiest in the area and well worth exploring before or after your dinner. It has a fantastic summer fair and scarecrow festival if you can make it in the summer months. It’s also a great starting point for many of the best hikes in the area. We love a good walk at Jacksons Bank before treating ourselves to a pint or two.

For another great country pub in the area give the Meynell Ingram Arms a try. Located in Hoar Cross just ten minutes drive from the Red Lion, it’s another of our favourites in Staffordshire.
